Elk Rapids Cinema, Elk Rapids, Michigan

A Petition to Stop Taxation of the Elk Rapids Cinema

The Chalfonte Foundation has filed an appeal with the Michigan Tax Tribunal to secure a property tax exemption for the Elk Rapids Cinema property. This exemption is critical for the ongoing operation and expansion of our nonprofit charitable programs, which include Village Radio, The HIP Show, PuppetART, student film exhibitions, and more. These programs enrich our community by offering diverse cultural experiences, educational opportunities, and artistic engagements.

Unfortunately, the Elk Rapids Township Assessor has objected to our appeal, stating that the property is "not being solely used for nonprofit purposes." We believe this claim is incorrect and does not reflect the true nature of our operations. To support our case, we are gathering community signatures to demonstrate the widespread support for the Chalfonte Foundation and its mission.

Here are a few key reasons why your support is crucial:

Support for Nonprofit Charitable Programs

The Chalfonte Foundation offers a variety of nonprofit programs, including piano scholarships, community radio, educational shows for children, and student film exhibitions. These programs provide significant cultural and educational benefits to our community.

Community Access

We offer discount tickets to elders and low-income families, ensuring that everyone in our community has access to cultural and educational programming.

Precedent in the Region

Nearby nonprofit cinemas, such as the Harbor Springs Lyric Theatre and The Bay Theatre, have been granted property tax exemptions. The Chalfonte Foundation's request is consistent with these precedents.

Volunteer-Driven Efforts

Our operations rely heavily on volunteers, including the President of the Chalfonte Foundation and the Elk Rapids Cinema General Manager, who receive no monetary compensation for their dedication and hard work.

UPDATE:  On August 23, 2024 the petition along with 229 signatures was sent to the Elk Rapids Township Assessor with some letters of support and a cover letter requesting the assessor reconsider and withdraw their opposition.    The letter is below.
