Elk Rapids Cinema reopens Memorial Day weekend!
After being closed for nearly four months, the Elk Rapids Cinema is re-opening its doors Memorial Day weekend with the blockbuster Marvel superhero film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
The 83-year-old art deco theater has been dark since late January, following the passing of longtime proprietor Joe Yuchasz.
The single-screen movie house opened as the State Theater in 1940. Yuchasz bought the theater from its second owner in 1973. Now, Yuchasz’s family is working hard to keep the tradition alive.
“Our Uncle Joe loved Elk Rapids, and bringing culture and entertainment to the village was important to him,” said his niece, Mary Vasquez. “The best way our family can honor his legacy is by keeping the theater open.”
