Always Free & Open to the Public
The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952) is a sweeping romantic adventure directed by Henry King and adapted from Ernest Hemingway’s celebrated short story. Starring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, and Ava Gardner, the film follows a disillusioned writer reflecting on love, regret, and artistic ambition while gravely injured on safari in Africa. Renowned for its lush Technicolor cinematography and globe-spanning locations, the film was a major critical and commercial success of its era, earning two Academy Award nominations. As part of our Classic Movie Series, The Snows of Kilimanjaro offers audiences the chance to experience mid-century Hollywood craftsmanship, literary adaptation, and timeless themes of memory, mortality, and redemption on the big screen.
About the Film’s Rating:
The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952) was released prior to the establishment of the modern MPAA rating system and is therefore listed as “Not Rated.” By contemporary standards, it is often compared to a PG or TV-PG rating, though it is best suited for older teens and adults due to mature themes. The film explores complex adult relationships, including infidelity, premarital relationships, and implied abortion, along with frequent drinking and smoking. While the content is handled with restraint typical of classic Hollywood cinema, its emotional and thematic depth may warrant parental guidance for younger viewers.

Pull up a seat, settle in, and start the new year with stories that stay with you long after the lights come up.
